Welcome to Hāmākua Plant Co.! We are Casey and Alex Chai, a husband-and-wife team running a retail plant nursery right here in Hāmākua. Our mission is simple: to cultivate biodiversity, food security, and ecological stewardship across the Big Island, one plant at a time.
We believe that every yard can help protect our island's unique ecosystems and feed our communities. That’s why we focus on growing healthy, robust plants that are ready to adapt to our island's diverse microclimates. We aren't just selling plants; we are partnering with local growers like you to care for the land we love.

Hawaiʻi is home to so many incredible native plants and species found nowhere else on earth. Growing native plants in your yard is a simple way to give them a place to thrive while helping restore little pieces of our island’s natural ecosystem.
We grow a wide mix of island-grown favorites, including ʻŌhiʻa Lehua, ʻAʻaliʻi, Alaheʻe, Pōhinahina, Loulu, ʻUlu, Koa, Hao, and ʻIlima, just to name a few. Every part of the Big Island has its own microclimate, so what works in one yard might not work in another. Not sure what to plant? We’re happy to help you find the right species for your space and get them off to a good start.

We carry a wide selection of mango, avocado, and citrus trees, along with many other fruiting varieties. With so many different microclimates around the island, choosing the right tree for your spot makes all the difference.
